A lovely color palette and a charming story come together in Lauren Emmons' No Cats in the Library.
This aesthetically pleasing picture book follows a stray cat named Clarisse who loves picture books and eventually finds her way to a library, She doesn't understand the "squiggly lines" on the books, but she enjoys the pictures, so she walks into a library to see more. Of course, the librarian gently shoos her out. After all, there are no cats allowed in the library,
Clarisse keeps trying to sneak in until she finds herself in the children's section. A little girl is thrilled to see Clarisse and starts reading to her. The girl's mother is happy to see her daughter reading aloud to Clarisse and exclaims that a "readaloud cat" is such a good idea! The librarian overhears this and realizes that perhaps there are cats allowed in the library, as long as they are readaloud cats.
It's a simple story — easy to digest and perfect for lessons on story structure. The unique color palette, gentle illustrations, and cute tale remind me of a PBS cartoon. For encouraging a love of books, I'd recommend No Cats in the Library. Plus, any kid with a cat or a librarian in their life is sure to love it!
