This is an adorable reference book and guide to proper cat care. This book comes from Dr Yuki Hattori, one of Japan's leading cat veterinarians at the Tokyo Feline Medical Center. He's even been called The Cat Savior! (Hall, Kenji. "What does your cat mean by 'miaow'? Let Japan's pet guru Yuki Hattori explain." The Guardian,Ā Sept 5, 2020, https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2020/sep/05/what-cats-mean-by-miaow-japans-pet-guru-knows-just-what-your-feline-friend-wants, Accessed 6 Sept, 2024.)

This book is easy to understand and clearly written by an experienced veterinarian. A lot of books can provide an introduction to the basics of catsāhow athletic they are, how well they can see in the dark, how they hunt, etc. But What Cats Want doesn't just introduce fun facts about cats, it also provides healthcare tips. For example, the book warns that a cat with a nosebleed may have a tumor. It recommends brushing your cats teeth, and gives you tips for how to introduce toothpaste to your cat!
Of course, the other thing that sets this book apart from other cat care books is the illustrations. Every page has about three cartoonish illustrations that demonstrate the tips or facts next to them. I found them absolutely darling! They were filled with personality, but also helped to further the text.

I've read a lot about cat care at this point, but I definitely learned new things. There was information on breed health concerns, tips on budgeting for a cat, and recommendations for the best way to layout your cat's litter box. I'll be keeping this one as a reference book (and to look at those adorable illustrations)! Worth it for Dr Hattori's perspective as a vet.
